Movement for the Defense of Democratic Rights (MDDR)

The Movement for the Defense of Democratic Rights (MDDR) is a dedicated civil society organization committed to safeguarding fundamental human rights, promoting democratic governance, and offering legal aid to vulnerable communities across Sri Lanka.

What We Do

Legal Defense & Human Rights Advocacy

We stand with individuals and communities facing injustice by providing free legal representation, filing fundamental rights petitions, and advocating for accountability in cases of rights violations.

Community Empowerment & Education

Through our “Law to the Village” program and human rights defender workshops, we educate citizens, teachers, and youth on civil rights and legal protections. We also publish and distribute the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

Farmers’ & Labor Rights Support

MDDR has a long history of standing alongside agricultural and labor communities—fighting against unfair taxation, land exploitation, and corporate injustice while providing pro bono legal support.

Democratic Governance & Peacebuilding

We work toward lasting peace and reconciliation by advocating for power-sharing mechanisms, supporting free and fair elections, and establishing active district-level Human Rights Defenders’ Collectives.
